Aarhus Wreck & Smith Rock – History, Adventure & Big Fish Encounters

Get ready to dive into a thrilling mix of maritime history and wild underwater action! The Aarhus Wreck is one of Queensland’s most fascinating historic shipwrecks. This 640-tonne sailing barque met a dramatic end in 1894 when she struck Smith Rock and sank in just 12 minutes. Today, her story lives on beneath the waves, making this a must-do dive for adventure seekers and history lovers alike.

Just offshore from Moreton Island, Smith Rock rises from the depths as a series of three jagged granite pinnacles, the tallest sitting only 6 metres below the surface. Beautiful yet treacherous, this rugged formation is now a magnet for marine life and an incredible dive site.

Beneath the surface you’ll explore a honeycombed landscape packed with ledges, crevices and structure. With a maximum depth of around 20 metres (and the best action at around 15 metres), this site delivers big on both colour and life. Expect swirling schools of batfish and butter bream, alongside cod, angelfish, beaked coralfish, clownfish and damsels weaving through the coral.

Craving something larger? Wobbegong sharks, turtles and spotted rays are regular visitors, and during migration season you may even hear the haunting soundtrack of whale song echoing through the water.

Between dives, relax on board with light snacks and refreshments, soaking up the sea air and swapping dive stories before heading back in for round two.
